“I’m not sure” Molly replied to the boy. “I’m thirsty though, I’ll be right back.”
My sister got up and left to get more pop. Leslie continued on her chatter with Bryan. They were involved in deep conversation about a man who sleep-walked and committed murder.
“So should he be locked up?”
“Well obviously, but he isn’t harmful when he’s awake, is he?”
The other boy looked up from across the table. His red hair curled around his boyish face, but he was no boy. His green eyes met mine. I never noticed how similar they were to mine.. A slight smile crept across my face. A questioning look followed. He pointed at his own eyes then gave me a thumbs-up. Confusion swept my mind. He liked my eyes? Then I remembered I’d done my eye shadow crazy today. Purples, greens and pinks streaked across my lids. I smiled completely and gave him a thumbs-up back. He returned the intangible happiness. His goofy smile was accompanied by a slight lift of his right eye brow. I laughed silently and looked down. It was the most unusual occurrence I’d ever shared with him, but the most comfortable. He seemed to understand that talking wasn’t necessary. Neither Bryan nor Leslie seemed to notice the silent compliment. Once Molly returned, she and the boy continued to talk.
